IN REMEBRANCE OF ---- WHAT?

Have you ever found yourself trying to remember why you were trying to remember something?  This problem of remembrance isn’t just a problem for those of us of a certain age.  It is also a problem of the church and Christian of any age.  So much so that Jesus addressed the problem of remembrance in His instructions to the disciples at the Last Supper

Remembering what we’re supposed to can be the difference between life and death, between joy and anxiety.  Hear from the Lord, how to keep your memory right.  The message is called: IN REMEBRANCE OF ---- WHAT?

IT'S A HUMBLING JOB, BUT SOMEBODY'S GOTTA DO IT

And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. (2 Corinthians 12: 8)

Paul had a problem, a major problem.  He called it a thorn in his flesh.  We don’t know for certain what this “thorn” was, but it was bad.  Paul called it a messenger of Satan.   It buffeted Paul.  (Buffet means it beat him down.)   Three times he went into extended prayer, begging God to take it away.

God had saved Paul from shipwreck, preserved him from stoning, delivered him from prison, and neutralized the venom of an island viper that bit Paul beside a campfire.  But this thing----this thorn in Paul’s side---- God refused to remove it.

In fact, it was God who sent the thorn to Paul in the first place.

Now why would God afflict His personally called apostle to the Gentiles with a thorn in his flesh? Why would God afflict His most prolific New Testament author with a messenger from Satan to beat him down.

Paul confessed the reason:  lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations.

Paul had a problem with pride.

Sometimes he got full of himself.  Just skim through 2 Corinthians and look at all the times and ways that Paul used the word boast or its translate equivalent.

Paul found it hard to humble himself.

So God did it for him.

For Christians, especially for Christians called to a level of extraordinary service, God DEMANDS humility.

But He offers a choice in the way we acquire humility.

We can (a) humble ourselves
if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face (2 Chronicles 7: 14)

Now when the Lord saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance. (2 Chronicles 12: 7)

Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18: 4)

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.  (James 4: 10)

Or (b) God will do it for us.
People shall be brought down, Each man shall be humbled, And the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled (Isaiah 5: 15)

And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.  (Matthew 23: 12)

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” (James 4: 6)

Paul taught a lot of spiritually correct things about humility and esteeming others better than ourselves (Philippians 2: 3); but Paul wasn’t good at practicing the humility that he preached.

Paul didn’t do a very good job of keeping himself humble, so God sent a thorn in the flesh , a messenger of Satan to do it for him.

You and I have a choice.  We can learn from Paul’s experience or we can share in Paul’s experience.

Something to think about the next time you assume that your story is the most important story they'll ever hear.

Something to think about the next time it's has to be cheating, or nepotism, or racism, because it's impossible that anybody was actually just ---- better.

Something to think about the next time you walk into a room thinking how blessed these people are to have YOU there.

Humbling you is a dirty job, but somebody's going to do it.

HOW TO BE A SCRIPT FLIPPING CHURCH

Jesus and His disciples didn’t have grand buildings, extravagant salaries, or powerful political party affiliations.  Yet, the church they formed had such an impact that they were called, “These who have turned the world upside down.”

The early church changed everything.  It flipped the script.

Can we be that again?  How?

The answer is in the Book, in the record of the earliest days of Jesus’ earthly ministry, the beginnings of the beginning of the church.

Learn what it takes to be a church that delivers real change to the world.  Learn how to once again be a SCRIPT-FLIPPING CHURCH.

Listen well.

Proverbs 30:15. "Unleeched"

Proverbs 30: 15     The leech has two daughters— Give and Give!
There are three things that are never satisfied; four never say, “Enough!”:
16     The grave, The barren womb, The earth that is not satisfied with water— And the fire never says, “Enough!”

Proverbs 30: 15, 16.  “Give me.”    “Help me.”

People use these statements interchangeably, but they are very, very different.  Different in DEFINITION.  And different in DEFINING.

“Help me” can mean “HELP me.”  Work with me.  Teach me what I didn’t know before I put myself in this situation.  Show me what I had not seen so that I don’t end up like this again.  Contribute whatever or however you choose to, but hold me ultimately responsible.  Please, HELP me be more responsible.

But, the phrase “Help me” can also be defined as “gimme.”  Gimme what I want.  Handle it so I don’t have to.  Release me from responsibility for my actions and circumstances.  Gimme, and then be ready to gimme some more.

What matters isn’t the words, but the DEFINITION/ the meaning behind the words.  Titles and terminology can be a disguise but the real DEFINITION behind what comes out of our mouths will soon show.

Differences in DEFINITION are important, but what’s more important are the differences in DEFINING.

In Matthew 7: 15-20, Jesus said that a tree, a prophet, or a person is DEFINED by the fruit he/she bears.  It is our fruit/actions/output that DEFINES us.

So, if what comes out of you is always “Gimme.  Gimme,” then according to the definition in Proverbs 30: 15, you are A LEECH.

You’re not a victim.  You’re not a little down on your luck.  You may say “all I need is a little help,” but if your idea of help is somebody else handing you money while you do nothing more or different------ God says that you’re A LEECH.

Rev., that’s harsh.

Bro., that’s Bible.

Leeches suck the life out of their host, pausing their consumption only long enough to reproduce.  Other than that a leech will drink until it dies, or the host does.

The grave never says, “Enough death.”

The barren womb is never filled.

The parched earth does not believe that it will ever get enough rain.

The fire never reaches more fuel and stops because it has consumed enough.

So it is with the leech, whether animal or human.   He doesn’t know when to quit taking.  She doesn’t know how to stop begging.

Consider yourself:
1.      When they tell you that you’re asking for their last, do you ask anyway?

2.      Will you really change the way you live to get the help you need, or do you keep saying “I’m doing good, I just can’t pay my bills  (again)”?

3.      Do you believe that sacrifice now will reward you later, or do you feel like you have to ball while you can because “I ain’t never gone have nothing anyway”?

If the description fits, there is a reason why your life sucks.

You’re a leech.

But wait.

You don’t have to stay that way.  You can be unleeched.

God can remove the consuming character from fire, like He did for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abengo (Daniel 3).

God can send rain on land that has known only drought for years, like He did through Elijah(1 Kings 18: 41-45).

God can speak life into the barren womb, just like He did for Sarah (Genesis 21: 1-7).

God can command the grave to give up its prey, as He did when He called Lazarus forth (John 11).

The Lord can make that which is never satisfied declare “Enough.”  God can unleech you.

Stop making excuses.  Stop waiting for someone else to give you something else.  Stop living a life that sucks.

Submit to God.  Give yourself to Jesus.  Walk according to the Living Word.  Be transformed.

Be UNLEECHED.

RETURN TO THE SOURCE

In “The Matrix” movie trilogy, human society was imperiled by an evil system that used false images to control and destroy.  End the end, the key to victory over the enemy was for a man to “Return to the source.”

Explore the parallels between the dilemma in the Matrix, the very real decline of the American family (especially the African American family), and an appeal from God in Isaiah chapter 44.

It’s a message about men, but for everyone.  It’s a message of urgency.  It’s the plan for victory.

The message is called RETURN TO THE SOURCE.

Listen well.
