COMING SOON

Hi.  It's Anderson Graves II.  Soon this blog will host my thoughts on the transformation of education, the church, and the Montgomery, Alabama area.  Right now, it's simply the fulfillment of a class assignment and my real posts are at www.hallmemorialcme.blogspot.com

This blog will serve as a forum for fielding and maybe solving issues that educators and other stakeholders have.  We'll be able to share events and hold candid discussions on the kind of "this is what's really wrong" issues that we talk about when our buggies run into each other at Walmart.

More than talk though--- A WORD TO THE WISE will be where we actually figure out how to fix things.

Stay tuned.

-Anderson

A WORD TO THE WISE: Proverbs 27: 15 "Can't Fix Crazy"

Proverbs 27: 15     A continual dripping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike;
16     Whoever restrains her restrains the wind, And grasps oil with his right hand.

Proverbs 27: 15. Before I started I high school we lived in the house that my great-grandfather built.  Now, if that statement conjured up the image of beautiful white antebellum place --- well haha.  This was a small wooden house on blocks, zero insulation and a simple tin roof.  Well-built in its time, this house’s time had long passed.

When it rained the roof leaked.  We patched it and we tarred it, but the roof still leaked. (Sometimes the walls leaked too, but that’s another story.)  During one particularly long thunderstorm after we’d put down the 5th or 6th pot to catch water I asked Daddy, “When will the roof stop leaking?”
Daddy replied, “When it stops raining.”

The structure of the house with the wear it had endured over time meant that if there was rain then there would be water dripping---- period.  Period.

Some women are like that house.  They are built to drip drama.  Their mentality and the way life has affected them over the time before ya’ll even met is such that, if they are in a relationship there will be drama.  Period.

Period.

Men have a term to describe such ladies.  We call them “crazy.”

Even the most stable and compatible couple can have an occasional argument just like even the most expensive, modern, and expertly constructed building can spring a leak.

But if the sister’s crazy then no matter how much money you use to patch things up, no matter how loudly you yell back to make it stop, no matter how humbly you apologize to make it better, no matter what wise or unwise technique you use----- the reality is that you can’t make crazy stop being crazy.

Crazy will spend the bill money and expect you to still pay bills.  Crazy will call your mama and cuss her out when your mama hasn't said anything to or about either of you.  Crazy will get you fired or put out of school and then call you a punk for not trying to do anything with your life.  Crazy will shoot at you, tell the police you shot at her, and then come down to the police station crying to bail you out.

She’s just built to drip drama and nothing you can do will stop the dripping.

The summer of my 9th grade year was the last time we had to worry about the roof our our house leaking ---- because the house burned down.

If you’ve married crazy or had a baby by crazy, may God work a miracle in your life.

If you haven’t  yet attached yourself for life to crazy----- burn that bridge and Get Out!

GEEEEEEEEET!  OUUUUUUTTTTTT!

Sermon Audio: GO GET JESUS SOME MORE

Luke chapter 14 gives the account of Jesus going over to someone's house for an after worship dinner.  When Jesus got there He made a special request.  What did Jesus want His host to go get for Him?  What should that request change the way you see your relationship to your church and your church's relationship to the world?

The message is called GO GET JESUS SOME MORE

Listen well.

A WORD TO THE WISE: Proverbs 27:14 "Dude, It's Too Early"

Proverbs 27: 14     He who blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it will be counted a curse to him.

Proverbs 27:14.  All I’m saying is that even God think that morning people are crazy.

Recall that when God, the Maker of the Universe, scheduled time for Himself, He put nighttime first.

Genesis 1: 5     God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

O.K., I’m joking (well, half joking).

Of course it’s not a sin to be a morning person just as it’s not inherently virtuous to be a night-owl.  Proverbs 27:14 tells us that it is wisdom though to be aware that everyone doesn’t keep or prefer the same hours.   Pay attention to other people’s peak hours.

For example, if you have a joint project with someone at work  and your partner has never been coherent before 10 A.M., don’t schedule the presentation at 8:00.

Even if you’re dealing with an early morning person, be mindful that anything earlier than their morning won’t be welcome.

For example, on workdays, my wife is up right at 5:30 A.M.  Me getting up at 4:30 and preparing her breakfast sounds sweet but what it actually turns into is me waking her up an hour early and banging pots in the kitchen so she can’t go back to sleep.  And everybody knows that the last few minutes of sleep are the sweetest.

Pay attention to other people’s peak hours.  If your boss likes to get the worst stuff out of the way early don’t wait until the end of the workday to tell him/her the bad news you found out at 8:30 that morning.

And if you are one of those insanely-chipper-for-no-reason-early-in-the-morning people don’t change for us night owls.  Enjoy your happy.  You go on and get your early morning praise on.

Just don’t try to impose your happy on me that early.  That would be -----unwise.

A WORD TO THE WISE: Proverbs 27: 13

Proverbs 27: 13     Take the garment of him who is surety for a stranger, and hold it in pledge when he is surety for a seductress. (New King James Version)
Proverbs 27: 13 Get security from someone who guarantees a stranger's debt. Get a deposit if he does it for foreigners. (New Living Translation)

Proverbs 27: 13.  The Bible encourages--- not “encourages.” The Bible commands us to be charitable (Matthew 5: 41, 42).  Charity means helping people even when that help means taking a loss on our part.

One of the reasons God supplies income and increase is so we can practice being godly by using our increase and our income to help the poor (Deuteronomy 24: 17-22).   Charity is as  fundamental (though more neglected) aspect of financial stewardship as tithing/giving.  But charity does not require stupidity.

It is charity if I give you my last good coat because I see that you’re cold.  It is charity if I fast for a week so that I can feed you.  It is charity if I cancel a shopping trip or a vacation so that I can give that money to someone who swears they’ll pay me back even though I  know up-front that they’ll never pay back a dime of that money.

Charity requires sacrifice & risk, but charity does not require stupidity.

Charity becomes stupidity when charity becomes debt.  To pay some other family’s rent is an act of charity.  To cosign for their apartment is stupidity because it effectively place you in their debt.  To send a donation to a missions program in Africa is charity.  To send your credit card number and account password to a “Kenyan pastor” you never met but whose email says he needs an investment of $30,00US to build a sanctuary for the Christians who are “most oppressed and indangered” ----- that’s not charity.  That’s stupidity.

We American consumer, including we Christian American consumers, put ourselves in debt and more debt all the time.  Every swipe of a credit card is an act of borrowing.  It’s taking out a piece of a pre-approved line of credit.

We over extended those lines of credit, in most cases not because of unexpected tragedies, but because of sin (greed, gluttony, vanity, envy, pride, lust, drunkenness, you know--- good times….gooood times).  We owe so much on our debt that we have to spend ridiculous percentages of  our income and increase just managing debt.

So, the debt (which the Bible teaches us to avoid) becomes a need, and charity (which the Bible commands us to give) is treated as a luxury.  We spend our financial lifespan in diligent service to what we never should have been a part of and is indignant opposition to what we should have been doing all the time.   Thus sin becomes a priority over righteousness and we prioritize or financial decisions in ways that are less & less Biblical and more & more----- stupid.

The result is------ ruin.  The ruin of the person and the ruin of Christian charity, which makes all our preaching about Love sound to society like “wah-wah-wonk-wah” (Charlie Brown’s teacher’s voice).

Proverbs 27: 13 says that we need help.  When (in the King James versions) Solomon said, “Take the garment of him,” he was basically saying, “Help him before he loses his shirt.”

If you’re the one in debt because of sin then you need to take what money you have and place it in some location or instrument that keeps you from continuing your unwise financial practices to the point of ruin.

If you’re doing business with people who do stupid stuff with money---- like pay his mistress’s rent, or pick up strippers and take them shopping, or buy a car for her never-employed-treats-her-like-crap boyfriend, or pay her tithes with a Discover card------ then you need to get your money from them up front.  They won’t have their money for long.

DAT! WHAT IS DAT?

What: Red Cross DAT (Disaster Action Team) organizing & training.  DAT volunteers  are trained and equipped to provide emergency food, clothing and shelter to families displaced by a disaster.

When: Monday, July 30, 2012, 6 P.M. – 9 P.M.

Where: Hall Memorial CME Church is at 541 Seibles Road, Montgomery, 334.288.0577

With a dozen families displaced by a recent apartment fire, it is particularly significant that The Montgomery Area Red Cross and Hall Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church are organizing Disaster Action Teams for Montgomery. A Disaster Action Team (DAT) is composed of volunteers who have taken the required training. They respond to local emergency and disaster incidents.

The teams provide emergency food, clothing and shelter to families displaced by a disaster. The team can provide canteen services (food, water and snacks), blankets, comfort kits and other small items to survivors of smaller scale disasters if they do not have their own means.

Training for the Montgomery Area Disaster Action Teams will be at Hall Memorial CME Church on Monday, July 30th from 6-9 P.M.   Dress comfortably.

Scroll up for directions.
If you are interested in being involved with Montgomery Area DAT, complete the Red Cross Volunteer Application at http://bit.ly/NoDZ3I .
