PRISONER OR SLAVE?

Prisoners wear chains.  Slaves wear chains.  Prisoners work for nothing.  So do slaves.  Prisoners receive the worst care and treatment as do slaves. Neither prisoners nor slaves are free.

The difference between prisoners and slaves is that if a wall comes down, most prisoners will try to escape.  Most slaves will start repairing the wall.

We think we are prisoners held back by an unjust system.  But, when a wall falls and a way to advance appears, do you rush for the opportunity; or do you stand around complaining about the mess, waiting for the overseers of the system to give you the tools to clean up by rebuilding the wall?

Are you a prisoner of the system or a slave to it?

Opportunity doesn’t free many slaves. So simply removing the obstacles to freedom won’t help slaves because they still look to the system to provide for them, and when they experience discomfort outside the system’s support they will return and submit to the system’s supervision.

Prisoners will suffer, starve, go without, and avoid areas of comfort just to stay free from the system.

The question isn’t “Who’s holding you back?”  The question is, “Whom do you expect to help you move forward?”

YOU BETTA WATCH YO' BACK!

I used to think that my father was paranoid.   Turns out he was just-....right.

Pops told me that you can’t trust anybody.  “They betrayed Jesus, boy.  You know they gone betray you.”
Pops said, “It’s not a deal until it’s in writing, and signed, and you got two copies.”
My father told me that most of the people who say they want to help you, don’t.  That the folks who come running to you for help will go running when you need help.  People lie.  Nothing’s easy.  And everybody who tells you that they got an easy way is lying.

Basically, my father taught me to always watch my back.

I thought he was just being paranoid.  Well, he’s no more paranoid than our Heavenly Father.

In Isaiah chapter 30, God warned His children about trusting every spirit and spiritual advisor who claimed to have an enlightened word.

“Woe to the rebellious children,” says the Lord, “Who take counsel, but not of Me, and who devise plans, but not of My Spirit, that they may add sin to sin. (Isaiah 30:1)

The Lord told them that their so-called friends were going to turn on them, but they wouldn’t listen.

[They] walk to go down to Egypt, and have not asked My advice,to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, And to trust in the shadow of Egypt!  Therefore the strength of Pharaoh shall be your shame, and trust in the shadow of Egypt shall be your humiliation. (Isaiah 30: 2, 3)

Israel brushed off God’s advice as the paranoid ramblings of prophets who didn’t understand what it was like.

They were "a rebellious people, lying children, children who will not hear the law of the Lord." (verse 9)

But God didn’t recant His advice. He didn’t let the true prophets back off from the true Word.  God, our Father who art in Heaven, continued to tell His people:
Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying,
“This is the way, walk in it,”
Whenever you turn to the right hand
Or whenever you turn to the left.  (Isaiah 30:21)

A Word behind you will continue to speak.  The Word, the Lord will speak. Listen to the Word that has already been given. Pay attention to the Word behind you.  If you want to see the Truth, then all you have to is turn around and WATCH YOUR BACK.

God warned His people, and He told them point blank they would suffer for ignoring His warning.  And they did. But God also promised that no matter what they went through, no matter what pain they brought on themselves by ignoring their Father’s good advice, in the end Father God would always be there for them.

The Lord will wait, that He may be gracious to you; and therefore He will be exalted, that He may have mercy on you (verse 18)

This world and the systems of this world do not love God’s children.  No matter how much they
promise to bring us peace and justice and prosperity and happiness, they will always, inevitably turn on us.

That’s what God said. "If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but   I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they           persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also." (John 15: 19, 20)

Turns out He is..... right.

“They betrayed Jesus, boy.  You know they gone betray you.”

Love people.  Don’t love the systems of this world.

Learn, master, and make use of the systems of this world.  But never, never trust those systems to do right because it’s the right thing to do.

Be a good worker, a good citizen, and a good neighbor; but never compromise God’s Word to conform to the current cultural definition of “good.”

Spend quality time every day in prayer.  Spend quality time every day with your Bible.  Tune your ears to the Holy Spirit and the Scripture He inspired.

Then, when the sound of the world becomes loudest, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.

Until you die or Jesus returns, remember what Daddy said.

Love everybody.

But watch yo’ back.

DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS

There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health. (Proverbs 12: 18)

The worst thing isn't always the big time haters on the sideline who say, “You can’t do it.  It won’t work.  You’ll never make it.”

No. The most painful thing is the small-time doubters on your team who say,
"You should go left," every time you say "Let's go right;"
who says, "The south is much nicer," every time you say, "Steer north;"
who take over when you say, "I'm doing this;"
who replies, "Ah, you can do it," when you scream, "Please help!"

It’s somehow especially sad when the damage comes from someone who actually likes you.

Jesus said, “Where I go you know, and the way you know.”
But Thomas immediately answered, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” (John 14: 4-5)

Thomas believed that Jesus was the Messiah.  He trusted in the Lord’s ultimate plan.  But from day-to-day, he expected Jesus to screw up whatever he was working on at the moment.

When Jesus said, “Lazarus is dead... Nevertheless let us go to him,”  Thomas was committed to going wherever Jesus went.
But Thomas couldn’t help saying to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.” (John 11: 14-16)

You can be a Thomas and not know it.  You probably don’t realize that you’re killing the one you love.   You certainly don’t mean to do it.  You’re just “joking” or “trying to help.”

But consider how often your first response to even the little things they say is, “No that’s wrong,” ------ even when you haven’t heard all of what they’re saying.

Think back over the “advice” you’ve offered and how often your counsel was just to do the opposite of whatever they were excited about doing.

They came to you pumped about going and you said, “Don’t you think you need to stay?”
They came to you determined to stay and you said, “Maybe it’s time for you to go.”
They prayed and fasted and told you what the Lord had shown them and you said, “Nah.  You’re supposed to do something entirely different.”

Are you a Thomas?

Jesus chose Thomas on purpose.  Thomas’ doubtful nature was important to Jesus’ mission, and  your Thomas-ness is needed as well.

But you need to be aware of the pain it causes.  You need to know that your doubt adds to wounds that they receive from the rest of the world.

Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

Brother Thomas/ Sister Thomas, we need you to see how things might go wrong so that we can prepare for those contingencies.  But we also need you to trust us not only for the end destination but for the incremental turns along the way.

We trust you, Brother Thomas/ Sister Thomas.  And because we trust you, your constant doubting makes us constantly doubt ourselves.

Know your power.  Know the razor sharpness of your idle words.  Don’t silence yourself.  Don’t sheath your blade.

But please, be careful with that thing.

The knife in the back from the hater or the thousand stinging cuts from the doubter on your side: they both bleed by the same amount.
