BEING JOSEPH

Blogging Genesis 39:20–41:46

Genesis 39: 20 Then Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison.

Joseph was a foreign slave declared guilty of the attempted rape of Potiphar’s wife; and Potiphar didn’t immediately execute and/or castrate him?  Instead he used his position as captain of the guard to have incarcerated in the KING’s prison.    The rest of chapter 39 doesn’t depict the prison as particularly cruel.  The inmates seemed to have a great deal of freedom, like it was a minimum-security, country-club prison.  Which implies that  Potiphar retained some sympathy for his house-slave and possibly some doubt about his wife’s testimony.   Goes to show that “When a man’s ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him” (Proverbs 16:7).  Goes to show that when God’s on your side they can’t break you even when they want to.

Even while locked up, “the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison” (Genesis 39: 21).  Joseph was transferred from general population to work detail as one of the warden’s  household slaves.  In that capacity, Joseph ran the prison, but something  inside him was changing.

When Israel-Jacob promoted Joseph above his brothers the teenage manager exalted himself, bragging about his dreams of the family bowing down before him.  When he got the promotion in Potiphar’s house, Joseph attributed his rise to master’s good judgment and trusted in his good evaluations and company loyalty to protect him from sexual harassment, false accusations, and racial profiling. But by the time he began running the king’s prison, Joseph didn’t want another promotion.  He didn’t want the praise of people who didn’t care about him but only what profits he could generate.

By the turning point in Genesis 40,  Joseph was WOKE to the injustice of the system in which he operated.   “I was stolen away from the land of the Hebrews; and also I have done nothing here that they should put me into the dungeon” (Genesis 40:15).

In other words, Joseph said, “Yeah, I’m in the big house, but they still see me as a slave and a prisoner,” so “Remember me,”  he begged the cupbearer (Genesis 40:23).

Meanwhile, he worked.  He worked for the man who kept him in dual bondage, and he endured being un-remembered by those to whom he had ministered in their time of distress.  Joseph no longer wanted to be promoted.  Joseph wanted to be FREE.

Years passed and Joseph was called to demonstrate his prophetic skills for the most powerful man in Egypt.  But Joseph had changed.  He wasn’t about self-promotion anymore.  To the contrary, he told the king of Egypt,  “It is not in me.”  He directed all the praise to “God,” whom Joseph affirmed, “will give Pharaoh an answer of peace.”
The son of Israel’s old arrogance was displaced by irreverence for “great” masters like the king of the Nile.   Twice, Joseph said, “God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do,” which is kinda like saying, “Duuh.  Isn’t it obvious?  I mean,” Joseph continued, “the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.” (Genesis 41: 25, 28, 32)

Get ready.  A twist is coming.

Joseph then outlined an ingenious plan to prepare Egypt for the coming economic downturn, and again an Egyptian promoted him; but this promotion elevated Joseph above his former masters and all masters in Egypt.  Pharaoh gave Joseph an Egyptian name and an Egyptian wife, making him a full Egyptian citizen (Genesis 41:39-45).  That’s not the twist.

Here’s the twist: Joseph got free, but he didn’t even try to go home.

He could have asked Pharaoh for a chariot to take him back to Canaan to rejoin his family and prepare them for the famine.  He could have sent for his father and baby brother to come stay with him in Egypt.   Joseph could have reconnected with his tribe any number of ways, but he didn’t.

He was finally free but his old family was as dead to him and he had been made to them.
Image result for you think you're free
Promotion doesn’t mean you’re free.  Sometimes, neither does freedom.

Yes, ultimately God brought them all back together.  But their re-unification, still years away at this point, would not undo decades of estrangement.  Joseph was going to be prime minister of the most powerful empire on the planet and he was still so wounded by his brothers’ betrayal that he turned his back on everything in his Hebrew culture --- except God.

WE are Joseph.

Black in America.  Residents by enslavement.  Citizens by struggle.  They have exploited our skills.  They have claimed our bodies for their entertainment.  They have jailed us unjustly.

WE are Joseph.

We have struggled for promotion and for freedom in times and contexts where one had to be sacrificed for the other.

WE are Joseph.

Our ancestral names and nations are dead to us.  Still, we dream through music and movies of re-unification with our motherland.  But the years of estrangement have stretched so long, and there are problems in this land that require our attention.  Here where we are citizens, named and known, are crises we can solve.

WE are Joseph.

So, we do what we do.  We do our jobs, and we throw shade, and we speak truth to power and despite ourselves we get promoted because we are that gifted.

WE are Joseph.

We gave up everything of who we were, but we kept our faith.  Tattered and misattributed as Black Christianity is, we keep the faith of our unconquered fathers because WE are Joseph.

YOU are Joseph.

Remember yourself.

Remember how God kept you.

Remember that before you started helping Pharaoh realize his dream, God gave you dreams of your own.

Remember that the God you have not forgotten has not forgotten you.

YOU are Joseph.

Go be great.

SLEEPING ON YOUR VISION

Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep.  . . . And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously (Genesis 28:10,11, 19).

Jacob was the primary heir of a wealthy family, but instead of buying food and lodging in the city of Luz, he slept alone in the woods.  Esau was the hunter; Jacob didn’t ENJOY sleeping outside.  He liked tents and red lentil stew, and beds.

At his campsite, Jacob didn’t lay his head on his extra blanket, or use the bundle of clothes he’d packed as a pillow.  Instead he pushed over a rock formation tall enough to be used as a pillar (Genesis 28:2), and slept with his head propped on the thin end of a weird looking boulder.

Why?

Avoiding town indicates that Jacob was afraid the townspeople would murder him and take his money.  Sleeping on a rock implies that Jacob didn’t pack an extra blanket or a change of clothes.  Jacob was afraid, alone, and absolutely unprepared for his situation.

He couldn’t go home because his brother was waiting to kill him.  He couldn’t stay where he was because he thought the people there would kill him.  And given his lack of wilderness survival skills he’d probably die before he got anywhere near Uncle Laban’s house in Syria.  Good night.

God had a great plan for Jacob since before he was born, but sometimes we can’t see the vision or hear the plan until we’re sitting in the empty silence of desperation.   Away from Mama’s tents and beyond the influence of Daddy’s money, Jacob was able to hear and see clearly.

In a dream, God showed Jacob that he was not and had never been alone.  Angels were busy doing God’s will on the earth (Genesis 28: 12).  Heaven knew what he was going through, and God cared.
All his parents’ talk of greatness and promises was real, but Jacob wasn’t an extension of other people’s dreams.  He was the one God had chosen.

Many of you have been told who you are supposed to be by loving, well-intentioned parents and mentors, and they may (or may nor) have been right,  but if you don’t have a clear vision of yourself for yourself, you will be insecure in your self and ill prepared for your future.

Many times when I was a child, elders in the church declared, “That boy’s gonna be a preacher someday.”  That boy (me) didn’t see it.  The prophetic accuracy of the elders’ assessment didn’t get me into the pulpit.  God had to show me my calling for myself.

The vision has to become YOUR vision.  Only then can you live it out.

Jacob woke and began working the kinks out of his neck.  He lifted his stone pillow into a stone pillar and anointed it with oil.  When you take ownership of the vision, the things you slept on become landmarks you raise up (verse 18).

When the vision becomes YOUR vision,  your present ceases to be the city of fear.  You realize your authority to transform the present city of fear into the place where God is (verse 19).

Jacob’s path followed the direction his parents had prescribed, but he left Bethel different from how he’d arrived.  He’d arrived fleeing Esau and trying to please Mother Rebekah.  He left pursuing his calling.  He’d arrived responding to others.  He left responsible for himself.

Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God.  And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You”  (Genesis 28:20-22).

Jacob realized that to walk in the vision, he had to walk in the faith.

God has a vision for you personally.  To fully realize it, you need to know the Lord, personally.

See it.  Wake to it.  Walk in it.  Walk in it by faith.

VIEW MESSAGE SOURCE

I get a lot of fraudulent emails from friends in my contacts list.

Well, actually I don’t.

I get a lot of fraudulent emails from con artists using the names of friends in my contacts list.

But I don’t get taken by the deception.  I right-click on any suspicious email preview and use a simple feature called VIEW MESSAGE SOURCE.

The VIEW MESSAGE SOURCE command shows me the email in a safe, coded version that displays the real email address and the path the email followed to get to my inbox.  The identity of the source determines whether or not I receive the message.

The identity of the source determines whether or not I accept the message.

The ancient people of God were as inundated with self-proclaimed experts, theologians, and prophets as we are.  God anticipated the confusion they would experience and gave them a VIEW MESSAGE SOURCE command.

And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?’  When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has NOT spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him. (Deuteronomy 18: 21-22)

When a speaker claims a prophetic revelation, just wait and watch whether what they declared and decreed  actually happens.  If it doesn't, then God is not the Source of their message.  Send their teachings to the spam folder.  Delete their sermon from your mental cache.  Continue browsing.

Some spiritual spammers are so clever that they can  pull off what looks like a real miracle. In Deuteronomy 13, the Lord explained what to do about them.

If there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other gods’—which you have not known—‘and let us serve them,’ you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams.... (Deuteronomy 13: 1-3)

Some fradulent emails will include links to legit looking websites and official documents confirming "your award of 1 million dollar USD."   But when those messages ask you to do what you know you shouldn't do (like surrender your banking account or credit card number), it's a sure sign of fraud.

When a message places other gods, philosophies, or priorities before or on the same level with Jesus; that's your big red notification of malicious software.  The messenger may show evidence of a mighty anointing, but don't grant them access to your soul.  Delete their message before you get stuck with a forcibly downloaded, inappropriate, or malicious theology.

The message may show up "in the name of Jesus."  The messenger may use the church itself as an inbox.  But before you let their words infect your spiritual operating system, you have to VIEW MESSAGE SOURCE.

Compare their statements with the Bible.  Read the context.  Cross-reference to other Scriptures.  Do the necessary study to keep your mental system updated on the Word of God.  Then you’ll spot suspicious messages more quickly.  VIEWING MESSAGE SOURCE will become a reflex.

In the days of the prophet Jeremiah, the people of Judah failed to view the source of their religious messages and the consequences were catastrophic.

Spiritual scammers had done disgraceful things in Israel, have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives, and have spoken lying words in My name, which I have not commanded them. Indeed I know, and am a witness, says the Lord. (Jeremiah 29: 22-23)

False teaching infected their culture so deeply that God had to shut them down and send them off to Babylon to be reset.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who prophesy a lie to you in My name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall slay them before your eyes. (Jeremiah 29: 20-21)

Christians receive a lot of messages from a lot of different sources.  Every one claims to be coming from Jesus.  Some of them---a lot of them--- are lying.   When you accept and receive a "Word" that looks good but is from the wrong source, you compromise your spiritual security.   And that is a major reason why the modern church is so weak, divided, and confused.  We have allowed malicious doctrine to creep in unawares.

Test every message, including this one.

Don’t let scammers further compromise our network.

Open your Bible.  Pay attention to what you’re taught, but never just take their or my word for it.  Go back to the Scriptures. VIEW MESSAGE SOURCE.
