FROM FAITH? TO FAITH!

As discussed in the previous post, Faith? of Abraham, the great patriarch was a man of faith: sincere, soul-saving, immature, and inconsistent faith.

In Genesis 15, God renewed His covenant to give Abraham and Sarah descendants as numerous as the stars.   In chapter 16, Abraham and Sarah plot to get their servant Hagar pregnant.  In chapter 20, the two great heroes of the faith revived their old scam of pretending Sarah was Abraham’s sister.  Abraham’s faith, immature and inconsistent as it was, couldn’t transform Abraham’s character.   So God kept working on him.

Through all of Abraham’s failings, God kept stepping in, interceding, showing him favor, giving him
signs, and reminding him of the promises.  The Lord’s purpose was to transform him into a man with strong, mature, and consistent faith.   Such a man would be more than the sperm donor by whom a promised child was conceived.  He would be the FATHER whose faith laid the foundation for a nation.

For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him. (Genesis 18:19)

God’s plan worked.  Over time, Abraham matured from a believer who couldn’t go two sentences without questioning God’s promise (Genesis 15:6-8) to a man who could pass the ultimate test of faith.

[It] came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, . . . “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”  (Genesis 22:1-2)

God said, “Abraham, Give me a sign.”

. . . Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”
So, he said, “Here I am.”
And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” (Genesis 22: 10-12)

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son . . .  concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead (Hebrews 11: 17-19).

Abraham isn’t a hero of the faith because of how his faith began but because of what his faith became.

After Abraham passed the test of faith, God renewed the covenant again but this time the Lord added a clause.

In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice” (Genesis 22: 18).

That seed added because Abraham was faith-full, that Seed is JESUS.

Saving faith is only the beginning of our journey.  Believe in Jesus enough to give your life to Him.  Then believe in Jesus more so that your life is transformed by Him.

Be warned.  That’s when the big test will come.

Be encouraged.  Only then will the greatest Blessing happen.

YOU GOTTA DO WHAT YOU GOTTA DO (audio of the sermon)

When you say, “I gotta do what I gotta do,”  it means that immediate and decisive action is needed.  But let’s be honest.  Sometimes you say that but you still haven’t decided what action is best. “I gotta do what I gotta do” may mean “I don’t know what I gotta do, but I know that I gotta do something.”

This is exactly the dilemma that a man named Nicodemus brought on a secret, late-night mission to see Jesus.  The Lord’s response to Nicodemus applies to you and to me.  Find out what Jesus meant when He told Nicodemus, YOU GOTTA DO WHAT YOU GOTTA DO.

Listen well.

“THE GENERAL IDEA”: Blogging through the General Rules of the CME Church

So John the Baptist would start off a sermon like this: “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?”  (Luke 3: 7)

Basically, “Hey, losers!  Do any of you wanna not go to Hell?”

(John the Baptist cares nothing for your motivational speaking techniques.)

John referred to the congregation as bunch of snakes.  He questioned their ancestry (verse 8).  He called them a bunch of useless trees waiting to be chopped down (verse 9).

From John the Baptist this wasn’t a series of  insults.  Well, it WAS a series of insults, but it wasn’t ONLY  a series of insults.  John’s introduction was also an invitation.  An angry, sarcastic, magnificently effective invitation.

They flocked to the altar. (Actually they flocked to the muddy edge of the Jordan river bank, but you get the imagery.)  Peasants, tax collectors, Romans, Galilean fishermen---- they asked, “What should we do, Reverend John.  We want to change.  We want to get right before the Messiah comes to judge us with His winnowing fan in His hand.  WHAT SHALL WE DO?!”

John answered them all.  Whatever their ethnicity, status, occupation, or past performance, he gave them pastoral counsel about what lifestyle changes to make to align their daily lives with the will of God.

The membership policy of the angry, sarcastic fire-and-brimstone Baptist preacher is the official membership policy of the Methodist movement.

One of the defining documents of the Methodist movement is John Wesley’s General Rules.

The introduction to the General Rules says:

The General Rules of the "United Societies" organized by Mr. Wesley in 1739 are as follows:

There is only one condition previously required of those who desire admission into these societies, a "desire to flee from the wrath to come, and to be saved from their sins."

That’s it.

No religious resume requirement.  No Bible literacy exam.  No financial disclosure statement.  You don’t have to first prove your worth or your commitment.  You just have to not want to go to Hell when Jesus comes to judge the world.

If you "desire to flee from the wrath to come, and to be saved from their sins," we’ll work with you on the rest.  The rest, of course, refers to those lifestyle changes.

The General Rules continue:

But wherever this is really fixed in the soul, it will be shown by its fruits. It is therefore, expected of all who continue therein that they shall continue to evidence their desire of salvation,

First, by doing no harm, by avoiding evil of every kind…
Secondly, by doing good…
Thirdly, by attending on all the ordinances of God…

I’m a Methodist pastor, and I don’t know for sure who in my church is truly saved, wherever this is really fixed in the soul.  But we can all know the evidence of at least their desire of salvation because it will be shown by its fruits.

We all come into the church as broken, unholy people; but in the church we strive together for wholeness and holiness.    In the church, we help each other align our daily lives with the will of God,
First, by doing no harm, by avoiding evil of every kind…
Secondly, by doing good…
Thirdly, by attending on all the ordinances of God…

Methodism is an open door to discipleship.  Membership is easy.  Discipleship is work.  From as far back at least as John the Baptist, that’s been the “general” idea.

THE WAY TO HEAVEN: GOOD OLE-FASHIONED LOVE

I heard a televangelist say, “To get into Heaven, it doesn’t matter what you do. All that matters is that God loves you.”

That’s beautiful.
Wrong.
But beautiful.

We tend to superimpose our modern cultural views of “love” on God, but you have to remember that when it comes to love and relationships, God is old-fashioned.

In the old days of courtship, an unmarried couple would meet in a designated area belonging to the family and under elders’ supervision: the outside of the tent, the parlor of the home, the courtyard.  In the old-fashioned system, love got you into the house, but only marriage would get you into the bedroom.

Heaven is eternal, intimate cohabitation with God Himself.  Jesus described our place in Heaven as a personal mansion-sized room where we are at home with the Lord (John 14: 2).

The world is the Lord’s footstool (Matthew 5:35).  The church is the house of God (1 Timothy 3: 15).  But Heaven--- Heaven is the bedroom.

As a human institution operating in a fallen world, the church is made up of people who SAY that they love God, but “love” doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone who uses it.

The love God wants with His church is the old-fashioned love between husband and wife. (2 Corinthians 11: 2; Ephesians 5: 25; Revelations 19: 7-9; Revelations 22: 10)

That old-fashioned marriage love is exclusive, submissive, better-or-worse, sickness-or-healing, prosperity-or-poverty, and explicitly committed.

You can hang out in God’s presence and enjoy His company and “love” Him without being committed in the old-fashioned sense. But it won’t get you into the bedroom of Heaven.

God’s just old-fashioned like that.

I know we’re not old-fashioned anymore, but think about what you expect in a modern marriage.

Does the way the other person treats YOU matter?

If your spouse ignored your every request for time and attention, would it affect your relationship?

O My people, what have I done to you? And how have I wearied you? Testify against Me. (Micah 6: 3)

If your spouse regularly violated your marriage vows, and then came home saying they had no regrets because it would all work out for good anyway---- would it affect your relationship?

Surely, as a wife treacherously departs from her husband, so have you dealt treacherously with Me, O house of Israel,” says the Lord. (Jeremiah 3: 20)

If the wearer of your marriage ring praised you in public but demanded that you give them money every time they did so, would that wear on your heart?  Would it affect the prospects of your marriage?

Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ (Matthew 15: 7-9)

If your spouse treated you like this  while you spent your money building a new and bigger house, would you not reconsider whether or not this spouse was the other name you wanted to put on the deed?

I was crushed by their adulterous heart which has departed from Me, and by their eyes which play the harlot after their idols; they will loathe themselves for the evils which they committed in all their abominations.  And they shall know that I am the Lord; I have not said in vain that I would bring this calamity upon them.” (Ezekiel 6: 9, 10)

Modern or old-fashioned, our actions affect the nature and direction of the relationship.

God loves us.  He loves us all no matter what, but what we do affects the kind of relationship God will have with us.

Ya’ll know Galatians 6: 7?  “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. “

That verse isn’t about money.  It’s about whether we choose faithfulness in spirit or spiritual adultery through the flesh.

For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (Galatians 6: 8)

In other words, God loves us, but unlike humans, love doesn’t make God stupid. God is not mocked.

Our actions/works cannot get us into Heaven.  All that matters is our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.  But in the context of that relationship, what we do matters A LOT.

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.” (John 14: 23, 24)

Our choices demonstrate whether our love and commitment is sincere in the old-fashioned sense or just some modern thing we profess so we can live in the new house not made with man’s hands.

God has old-fashioned expectations for our “love.”  So be as good to God as you’d want your spouse to be to you.
