THE WAY TO HEAVEN: GOOD OLE-FASHIONED LOVE

I heard a televangelist say, “To get into Heaven, it doesn’t matter what you do. All that matters is that God loves you.”

That’s beautiful.
Wrong.
But beautiful.

We tend to superimpose our modern cultural views of “love” on God, but you have to remember that when it comes to love and relationships, God is old-fashioned.

In the old days of courtship, an unmarried couple would meet in a designated area belonging to the family and under elders’ supervision: the outside of the tent, the parlor of the home, the courtyard.  In the old-fashioned system, love got you into the house, but only marriage would get you into the bedroom.

Heaven is eternal, intimate cohabitation with God Himself.  Jesus described our place in Heaven as a personal mansion-sized room where we are at home with the Lord (John 14: 2).

The world is the Lord’s footstool (Matthew 5:35).  The church is the house of God (1 Timothy 3: 15).  But Heaven--- Heaven is the bedroom.

As a human institution operating in a fallen world, the church is made up of people who SAY that they love God, but “love” doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone who uses it.

The love God wants with His church is the old-fashioned love between husband and wife. (2 Corinthians 11: 2; Ephesians 5: 25; Revelations 19: 7-9; Revelations 22: 10)

That old-fashioned marriage love is exclusive, submissive, better-or-worse, sickness-or-healing, prosperity-or-poverty, and explicitly committed.

You can hang out in God’s presence and enjoy His company and “love” Him without being committed in the old-fashioned sense. But it won’t get you into the bedroom of Heaven.

God’s just old-fashioned like that.

I know we’re not old-fashioned anymore, but think about what you expect in a modern marriage.

Does the way the other person treats YOU matter?

If your spouse ignored your every request for time and attention, would it affect your relationship?

O My people, what have I done to you? And how have I wearied you? Testify against Me. (Micah 6: 3)

If your spouse regularly violated your marriage vows, and then came home saying they had no regrets because it would all work out for good anyway---- would it affect your relationship?

Surely, as a wife treacherously departs from her husband, so have you dealt treacherously with Me, O house of Israel,” says the Lord. (Jeremiah 3: 20)

If the wearer of your marriage ring praised you in public but demanded that you give them money every time they did so, would that wear on your heart?  Would it affect the prospects of your marriage?

Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ (Matthew 15: 7-9)

If your spouse treated you like this  while you spent your money building a new and bigger house, would you not reconsider whether or not this spouse was the other name you wanted to put on the deed?

I was crushed by their adulterous heart which has departed from Me, and by their eyes which play the harlot after their idols; they will loathe themselves for the evils which they committed in all their abominations.  And they shall know that I am the Lord; I have not said in vain that I would bring this calamity upon them.” (Ezekiel 6: 9, 10)

Modern or old-fashioned, our actions affect the nature and direction of the relationship.

God loves us.  He loves us all no matter what, but what we do affects the kind of relationship God will have with us.

Ya’ll know Galatians 6: 7?  “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. “

That verse isn’t about money.  It’s about whether we choose faithfulness in spirit or spiritual adultery through the flesh.

For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (Galatians 6: 8)

In other words, God loves us, but unlike humans, love doesn’t make God stupid. God is not mocked.

Our actions/works cannot get us into Heaven.  All that matters is our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.  But in the context of that relationship, what we do matters A LOT.

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.” (John 14: 23, 24)

Our choices demonstrate whether our love and commitment is sincere in the old-fashioned sense or just some modern thing we profess so we can live in the new house not made with man’s hands.

God has old-fashioned expectations for our “love.”  So be as good to God as you’d want your spouse to be to you.

WHY THE HOLY SPIRIT GOT YOU TRIPPIN'

Sheila and I were at a conference-style church gathering, and we were playing, “Who’s that preacher?”

“That’s Rev. So-and-so, and that’s his wife over there.”

“Wait.  That’s his WIFE?”

“Yeah.”

“Hmmph.  Well, they sure don’t act married.”

We went to my mother-in-law’s house one day, and Sheila walked up the driveway ahead of me.  As I came around the front of my truck I saw the summer sun glinting off her legs and flaming that natural reddish tint at the edges of her black-brown hair as she slow motion strided up the walkway.

I thought, “She’s so fine.  Man, I wanna…” And I almost broke my leg because I walked into a 4 foot tall pile of bright white rocks piled in the middle of the driveway right in front of me.

Rev. So-and-so didn’t seem moved at all by the presence of his wife in the room.   I was so overwhelmed by the experience of my wife’s presence that my peripheral vision shut down.  But both of us are EQUALLY  married.

I don’t always trip when Sheila’s around.  Sometimes I just go on about what ever business I’m handling, but even then I'm still married. Neither my nor Rev. So-and-so’s experience in our wives’ presence change the nature or our relationships.  We’re still married.

It’s the same way with the Holy Ghost.

The Bible distinguishes between our RELATIONSHIP with the Holy Spirit and our EXPERIENCE of the Holy Spirit through prepositions typically translated With, Upon & In.
-          WITH refers to the presence.
-          UPON depicts an experience.
-          IN means the relationship.

WITH refers to the presence of the Holy Spirit.
At the Last Supper before His Crucifxion, Jesus said: And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14: 16-17)

Jesus said that the Holy Spirit already dwells WITH YOU. Before Pentecost, before the Ascension, before the Resurrection or the Crucifixion, the Holy Spirit was already present in the world near and WITH the disciples.  During the previous 3 ½ years of ministry, the Holy Spirit who had hovered over the face of the waters at Creation had moved alongside the disciples, empowering them to heal the sick, cast out demons, and preach the gospel even when they were far from Jesus’ physical presence.  (Luke 10: 1-17)

Even someone who isn’t saved can sometimes sense the presence of God near/ WITH them. It is the PRESENCE of the Holy Spirit prodding the sinner that leads an unbeliever to give his/her life to Jesus Christ.

UPON refers to the experience of the Holy Spirit
Samson’s became super strong in the face of Philistine aggression when the Holy Spirit came UPON him (Judges 14: 6, 19).  Old Testament prophets spoke truth beyond their knowledge when the Spirit came UPON them (2Chronicles 15: 1; 24: 20).  UPON was the experience that Elisha sought through his mentor Elijah (2 Kings 2:9).

Sometimes the spirit would even come UPON someone who wasn’t in right relationship with God.  In 1 Samuel 16: 14, God withdrew His favor and the Holy Spirit from King Saul.  The king descended into murderous, paranoid, and self-destructive jealousy of David; but in 1 Samuel 19: 23-24 the Holy Spirit came UPON Saul so powerfully that he prophesied instead of killing David.  Saul woke up naked, and I’m sure his first thought was, “Man, I’m trippin’” (translated from the original Hebrew).

In the New Testament, on the day Jesus ascended to Heaven, He promised that you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come UPON you… (Acts 1: 8)

That promised was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2) when the disciples had a profound, miraculous, publicly verifiable EXPERIENCE of the Holy Ghost.

When people sincerely get caught up in worship and shout, or weep, or run, or dance, or speak in tongues, or pass out, or in other ways start trippin’; they are having a Spiritual experience.  That’s wonderful.  But ultimately God calls us beyond presence and experience to RELATIONSHIP with the Holy Ghost.

IN means relationship
— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14: 16-17)

About 50 days before the Pentecost experience, on the  evening of Resurrection Sunday the disciples were hiding out from the Jewish leaders.  Jesus appeared, verified His identity, and when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. (John 20: 22)

Whomever is saved by faith in Christ already and automatically receives the Holy Ghost to dwell in their hearts.  Before Pentecost, before they spoke in tongues, the disciples were saved. Their relationship was not dependent upon their experience.

Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. (2 Corinthians 1: 21-22)

The indwelling of the Spirit,  not the visible outpouring of an experience, is the mark and seal of salvation. ANYONE can have the experience.  Once, God made a donkey speak in an unusual tongue (Numbers 22).

That said, genuinely being in relationship with the Holy Spirit of God will make you trip, but maybe not the way you expect.  Maybe you shout out during worship, and maybe you just spend years in the Amazon sharing the gospel with a tribe of cannibals.

Maybe you run up and down the aisle during a piano riff, and maybe you just take in troubled foster kids alongside your biological children and love them all the same.

Maybe you trip over the Holy Spirit by passing out when the preacher touches your forehead, but maybe you just move your family out of your gated community to live in the most crime-ridden neighborhood in your city because the Holy Spirit told you to go and love those neighbors as you love yourself.

Rev So-and-so didn’t stumble one time as far as I could see, but he and his wife had been together almost as long as my wife and I have been alive.  Their relationship defines their experience not the other way around.  And clearly they gotta be pretty happy with the experience.

When Sheila and I were dating, I sometimes tripped over her.  (Literally, I’d be looking at her and not watching where I was walking, and the sidewalks on campus weren’t always even.)   But our love deserved more than me trippin’.  The highest expression of my love was a commitment, the surrender of my personal plans to OUR destiny as a couple, as a family, as one.

He who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. (1 Corinthians 6: 17)

Now I have her presence, the experience of her presence, and the till-death-do-us-part security of our relationship.

That is what God offers us in the Holy Spirit.

Don’t settle for less.

WHO DO YOU TELL THEM I AM?

So we’re eating pizza and Philly cheeseteaks and my wife says, “I don’t know why people don’t take the question Jesus asked more seriously.”

If you’ve never talked to my wife, you don’t know that she often begins conversations out loud where she left off the conversation in her mind.

The question Jesus had asked was, “But who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16: 15).

Sheila said, “I don’t know why people don’t take the question Jesus asked more seriously. If it was your boyfriend or your husband, you’d know it was serious.
‘When people talk about you to me, what do they call me?
‘And who do you tell them that I am?’
That’s like a major question.  Why don’t they think that was important to Jesus?”

Sheila (as usual) is right.

We treat “the question” like a kind of casual theological pop quiz.  Like Jesus was checking to see if the disciples had an adequately orthodox view of Christological doctrine.  (Google it if you have to.)

But “the question” wasn’t casual.  It was major.

It still is.

When you’re away from church and other Christians and your sin-loving friends are talking about Jesus and judging His body (the church), what do you say?  Do you say anything?

When your buddies from other faith-traditions are talking about Jesus, calling Him this and that, do you laugh and agree so they don’t think you’re weird?

Do you call Him a teacher because that’s what they called Him?  Do you nervously make little of His divinity?  Do you hasten to make sure that they know that you don’t think He was any more of a big deal than any other spiritual figure?

Do you call Him your Lord, and Savior, and God of everything?

Or do you say, “He’s just a friend”?

I know.  Not everybody comes from the same tradition.  Everyone's entitle to their own beliefs. We’re all children of the same God.

I know.  I know.

“But who do YOU say that I am?”

That’s what Jesus wants to know.

And the answer majorly matters to Him.

WHO OR WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?

It’s a simple question but the answer can both deepen and elevate our praise, our worship, and the day-to-day way we experience the presence and power of Jesus Christ.

No matter how much or how little you have in material riches, this Thanksgiving can be a transforming moment in your life, if you learn the lessons of a message wrapped up in the question: WHO OR WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR?
Listen well.

THE OTHER HALF OF CRAZY

Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?

You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. (James 4: 1, 2)

The layman’s definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.   But, that’s only half of the crazy.

The crazier half is not realizing that the reason you fail is because of the things you continue to do over and over.

James, the brother of the Lord, wrote a plea to the early church.  In the A. T. Graves paraphrased version James said: “Where da’ crap do you think all this drama comes from?  Don’t you see that you’re the source of all your confusion?   You want stuff, and the way you try to get it is the very reason why you don’t have it.  But you keep trying to get it the same way.”

James goes on to point out that some of the stuff they want is stuff they shouldn’t have---- but that’s a topic for another post.

If your life is a continuing cycle of 4 months of ballin’ followed by 2 months of bankruptcy and begging------ where da’ crap  do you think your bankruptcy comes from?  It’s not because of haters, or the government, or your baby’s daddy/ mama ‘nem.  It’s because as soon as you get a little money, you spend it foolishly.   Stop the foolishness (STOP not pause and restart) and the cycle of desperation will magically go away.

If you keep falling in and out of toxic, dead-end, destructive relationships------ who da’ crap do you think keeps bringing these people into your life?  The neighborhood doesn’t go out with them.  Your “haters” don’t give them your number and home address.  And all men/ all women aren’t like that----- or you wouldn’t have so many couples to envy.  Baby, it’s you.  If you stop selecting your romantic interests based on the worst possible set of standards then you wouldn’t keep ending up with the worst possible kinds of people.

If your church is in continual decline----- who?  Who in crap do you think is killing the ministry?  The gates of Hell can’t prevail against the church, but the Hell on the inside will kill it like cancer.  Stop blaming the media, the bishops, the big church up the road, and the devil.  It is the wars and fights we perpetuate among ourselves that kill churches.  It is our own desires for power and control no matter what the cost to the young, the weak, and the spiritually vulnerable.

We fail because we keep doing the things that cause failure and we not only expect a different result, we haven’t even accepted that our current results are our fault.

Fortunately, James articulates the solution as well as the problem.

James 4: 7-12.

·         Submit to God.

·         Resist the devil

·         Draw near to God

·         Cleanse your hands

·         Purify your hearts

·         Lament

·         Mourn

·         Weep

·         Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.

·         Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord

·         Do not speak evil of one another

Do these things instead of what you’ve been doing/ are doing now and these will be your new results:

·         The devil will flee from you.

·         God will draw near to you.

·         The Lord will lift you up.

If you want different, you gotta do different.  But first, you have to accept that what you are still doing is the reason that you are still failing.

Yeah, I know that sucks, but I’m only telling you because I love you.
