ALL I NEED IS A SCREWDRIVER AND A PRAYER

Dr. Who and his Sonic Screwdriver

Last week my laptop crashed.

I don’t think you understand.

MY LAPTOP------ crashed!

Imagine that you came home and a room in your house had burned down.  Not the whole house, just one room.  But that room contained all of the work you’d done for the last 6 years:  your resume, your references, transcripts, certificates, all your sermons, all your blogs, all 3 versions of that book manuscript, chapter sketches and drafts for the other 30 incomplete manuscripts, the poems, the curriculum outlines, church reports, agency files for two different non-profits, the presentations, the…. AHH LAWD, MY LAPTOP DIED!

But O.K.  I can handle this.  I was a computer science major for two semesters. I’ll figure it out.

I pulled out my and phone and started following the threads on tech forums.  I watched the youtube videos.  I learned how to throw my computer into start-up mode, access the bios, and check boot priority settings.   I spent a week studying LAN, WAN, HDD, and PXE-ROM troubleshooting.

Psshhh.  That stuff didn’t work.

AHH LAWD!   MY LAPTOP!

The only technique that worked was when I texted my wife and asked her to pray for my laptop.   LOL.  I’m not joking.

When Sheila prayed, my computer loaded and worked just fine.  The only reason I’m not curled fetally in the cold corner of a mental hospital is that I used those windows of functionality to back up my files.

So, the first thing I learned from this ordeal is that God likes my wife more than He likes me.    (1 Peter 3:7)

Ultimately I had to admit incompetence and take my computer to Best Buy.  “David” at the Geek Squad kiosk looked intently at the repeating error message on the DOS screen and declared, “Let’s open it up and see what we got.”

Now I expected David to scan my hard drive, perhaps compare circuit connection to a schematic on his ipad, perform a remote diagnostic, recite a bunch of acronyms and physics terms, and then ship my laptop off to Seattle for Bill Gates's nephew to reprogram.

But what David said was, “Oh, I see the problem.  The screws on your hard drive are loose.”

Silence.  Eyes squint. Head cocks slightly. Lean over the counter to look at the upturned piece of technology that’s essential to my working life.

Yep.  Those are screws.  Yep.  They’re clearly loose.

20 seconds later my hard drive is whirring and the Windows 10 icon appears out of the blackness.

A week of self-taught computer tech training and the problem was fixed ---- with a screwdriver.

Two points:
1st Point. The problem you’ve been crying out to God for may have a very simple solution, but you can’t find it until you confess your inability to fix it yourself and open up to the right person.

Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.  (James 5: 16)

Scripture tells us to confess our troubles to righteous (spiritually mature and trustworthy) Christians.  But not for forgiveness. Forgiveness comes from God. You “confess your trespasses to one another”so you can “pray for one another” and God can show you the solution (healing).

I was praying over my laptop before I called my wife, but when the Board was meeting in a couple of  hours, and the reports were behind that blank screen;  I had to admit that the preacher’s prayers weren’t hitting hard enough.  I needed prayer support.

There’s a problem you’re facing, and your prayers aren’t hitting hard enough.  Find a righteous (spiritually mature and trustworthy) man or woman and open up so you can pray for one another.

Also, do you remember the story of the first Christian evangelist to the region west of the Sea of Galilee?

Jesus said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you.” And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled. (Mark 5: 19, 20)

Maybe you’ll remember the story by another name.  He was the man possessed by a “Legion” of demons (Mark 5: 1-20).

Jesus hadn’t come looking for him.  He went and found Jesus.  He cried out to Jesus while he was in the midst of a thousand different kind of crazy, and  Jesus healed him.  Once he was in his right mind, he sat at Jesus’ feet learning the gospel (verse 15).  And then, only then, he was in a condition to talk to the Lord about his calling (verse 18).

Final Point.  Whether you’re a computer or a choir director, a preacher or a parent; no matter how smart, popular, or anointed you are, your stuff’s not gonna work right if you’ve got a few screws loose.

Get some help.

STALLING CRAZY

Some people have the almost magical ability to turn their bad day into everybody’s bad day.

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon was one of those people.

In Daniel chapter 2, Nebuchadnezzar had a recurring nightmare.   The dreams  were so bad that he started staying awake all night.  On top of that, he either couldn’t remember what happened in the dreams or he didn’t want to tell anybody.  Either way, anxiety and sleep deprivation accumulated until the head of the Babylonian empire just sorta snapped.

He called for all of the the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and Chaldeans.  These were the Ivy Leaguers and think tank fellows of the day.

Nebuchadnezzar assembled them as an imperial task force an said, “I have had a dream, and my spirit is anxious to know the dream.” (Daniel 2:2, 3)

They replied, “Tell your servants the dream, and we will give the interpretation.”  (Daniel 2:4)

King Nebuchadnezzer said, “No. You tell ME the dream and what the dream means or I’m gonna chop you up into little pieces, kill your family, burn your house to the ground, and use the pile of smoldering ash as a garbage dump.”  (Daniel 2:5, paraphrased)

Well now EVERYBODY’S having a bad day.

The academics were shocked.  They explained that his request was unreasonable and impossible to comply with. (They would’ve said “with which to comply.”)

The king accused them of stalling. “I know for certain that you would gain time.”  (verse 8)

They were  stalling so they could stay and explain very calmly and rationally that it was highly irregular to threaten the leading minds of the nation with death under those conditions.

“There is not a man on earth who can tell the king’s matter; therefore no king, lord, or ruler has ever asked such things of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean.” (Daniel 2: 10)

And that’s where the “wise men” messed up.  You don’t tell crazy people that they’re acting crazy.  That just makes them act crazier.

Jesus said, “Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.” (Matthew 7:6)

They called King Nebuchadnezzar unreasonable and he responded by having them killed and ordering the deaths of all their colleagues, co-workers, and employees.

When you’re dealing with crazy, like everybody’s-about-to-have-a-bad-day crazy, you don’t stall to stay.    You stall to leave.

A young Jewish academic named Daniel worked in the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and Chaldeans industry.  When Arioch, the head of the king’s hit squad, came to kill him, Daniel stalled.

“Why is the decree from the king so urgent?” Daniel asked (verse 15)

Daniel talked his way into an audience with the king.  The king who hadn’t slept in days except to doze off into a nightmare he couldn’t remember, and these guys he pays to know stuff don’t know anything, but, yeah, they paid for that, they’re all gonna pay, bwahahaha, who are you--- that king.

Daniel did NOT tell Nebuchadnezzar to calm down.  He did NOT appeal to Nebuchadnezzar’s sense of mercy or reason.   Daniel stalled so he could leave.

Daniel went in and asked the king to give him time, that he might tell the king the interpretation. (verse 16)

Basically, Daniel said, “Sure I’ll tell you what you dreamed that you don’t even remember.  Sure, but first I need to run home real quick.”

Sometimes, you have to put some distance between you and the crazy, so you can draw closer to God.  Otherwise, you’ll get drawn into their crazy.  Why do you think Jesus kept wandering off from the disciples? (Luke 5: 16)

"Wait here while I go there and pray."

Stall……. to leave.

If you can’t  physically get away from crazy, you can create mental and spiritual distance.

In August 2013, a mentally troubled man with an AK-47 charged into an Atlanta elementary school and pointed the gun at school clerk Antoinette Tuff.  Physically, she had nowhere to go, but she still managed to stall and leave.

In her mind, Miss Tuff went back to her pastor’s last sermon when he’d talked about showing compassion for people in grief.   She took the gunman away from his problems and plans by talking about her family and her past struggles with suicide.  In that office, Miss Tuff prayed with the crazy man who had come to kill her.  She responded to the threat in the most Divinely insane way.  She called the man with the gun, “baby,” and she loved him.

The gunman surrendered.  No children were hurt.  (Read more about Antoinette Tuff here.)

Daniel left the king’s audience, went home, and called his friends. Together they prayed until God gave Daniel the impossible answer to the king’s insane request.

Then Daniel went back to minister to crazy King Nebuchadnezzar (cause crazy needs Jesus, too).

Daniel went to Nebuchadnezzar and said, “There is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed, were these…” (Daniel 2: 27, 28)

In the end, the king rewarded Daniel, rescinded the execution order, and said, “Truly your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since you could reveal this secret.” (Daniel 2:47)

You can’t reason with crazy, but God can.  But it takes time, God’s time.  So stall.  Move yourself and the conversation away from crazy to what God wants to say.  Then leave the rest up to God.

HANDICAPPED PARKING

My wife Sheila will not park in a handicapped spot.  She won’t sit in a wheelchair, nor will she lean on someone else’s crutches or cane.  She has this semi-superstition that if she acts like she needs the help then God will make it so she really needs it.

Other people don’t share Sheila’s apprehension----like the driver in the picture above.  I think that if you asked the driver why he took the handicapped spaces, he’d say what an associate once told me when I asked why his able-bodied tail parked in handicapped spaces.

He said, “It’s a good spot, and I’m in a hurry.”

And that’s why King David of the Old Testament parked in a handicapped spot.

Let me explain.

In 1 Samuel chapter 21, David was a fugitive from his jealous and homicidal king.  David had loyally served King Saul, protected Saul’s kingdom as an elite soldier, ministered to Saul’s distressed spirit as a musical therapist in his court, saved the king from assassination on at least 2 occasions, befriended Saul’s son, and --- by Saul’s own arrangement--- married Saul’s daughter.  Still King Saul wanted David dead, so David had to leave town.  In fact, David had to leave the country.

Then David arose and fled that day from before Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath. (1 Samuel 21: 10)

Gath was Goliath’s hometown. You know--- Goliath, the giant, champion of Philistia, blasphemer of God; David hit him in the head with a rock and cut off his head.  That Goliath.  That Gath. (1 Samuel 17)

You wouldn’t think that David would find a safe place in Gath, having decapitated their local celebrity and all.   But Saul was closing in and David was in a hurry to find sanctuary.  So, David found a spot for the handicapped.

So he changed his behavior before them, pretended madness in their hands, scratched on the doors of the gate, and let his saliva fall down on his beard. (1 Samuel 21: 13)

David feigned mental illness.  He pretended to have a cognitive disability.

He played crazy.

And they let him stay parked in Gath.

Then Achish [king of Gath]  said to his servants, “Look, you see the man is insane. Why have you brought him to me?  Have I need of madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?” (1 Samuel 21: 14, 15)

Instead of bringing David into his house (in chains), Achish told his people to leave ole’ crazy David alone.

Cause ancient peoples (pagan and Jew) kept reserved space for the mentally ill.

Long before researchers began to understand the true nature of mental illness, God understood.   Long before advocates began to call on societies to stop mistreating those who used to be called handicapped, God had already codified special protection for them in His Word.

You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God: I am the Lord. (Leviticus 19:14)

Cursed be anyone who misleads a blind man on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen. (Deuteronomy 27: 18)

Supposedly religious people (including supposed Christians) have in various times and settings horribly mistreated the disabled, and done so in the name of God.  But God Himself---- God has always been in favor of towing the non-disabled guy double-parked in the handicapped spaces.

David wasn't really disabled, so he didn’t stay parked in Gath very long.  1 Samuel chapter 22 says that David moved to a non-handicapped space in Adullam.  It wasn’t as close a space.  In fact it was way out in a cave.   (1 Samuel 22: 1)

David, a student of God's Word, understood that YOU AIN’T SUPPOSED TO PARK IN HANDICAPPED SPACES.

God wants and expects us to set aside space in our land and our resources for those with special needs, i.e., the especially needy.

When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest.
And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the Lord your God. (Leviticus 19: 9, 10)

As Jesus said in Luke 14: 13, 14,
“When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.
And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

In His Word, God is up front that when we set aside those resources, someone will exploit the system.  Somebody who isn’t disabled will park in front of the wheelchair sign.  Somebody who could have a job will choose to draw unemployment.  People will park in the fire lane when nobody’s even on fire.

It's gonna happen.

Set aside the space anyway.

David’s playing crazy did not invalidate God’s Word in Leviticus and Deuteronomy.  And, none of the very real abuses of charitable systems invalidate our obligation to care for those who are especially needy.

Just cause some jerk double-parks in the handicapped spot doesn’t mean you take down the signs.

But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?  (1 John 3: 17)

SIN, MONEY, & CRAZY

Many churches and church member face serious problems.  Those problems are diverse and complex, but in the congregations I most interact with, all of the major issues boil down to 2 things:  sin and money.

The life of Gideon in the book of Judges deals with the problems of sin and money, and it shows us the solution.  But I have to warn you, the answer is a little crazy.

The title of the message is SIN, MONEY, & CRAZY.

Listen well.

THE OTHER HALF OF CRAZY

Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?

You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. (James 4: 1, 2)

The layman’s definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.   But, that’s only half of the crazy.

The crazier half is not realizing that the reason you fail is because of the things you continue to do over and over.

James, the brother of the Lord, wrote a plea to the early church.  In the A. T. Graves paraphrased version James said: “Where da’ crap do you think all this drama comes from?  Don’t you see that you’re the source of all your confusion?   You want stuff, and the way you try to get it is the very reason why you don’t have it.  But you keep trying to get it the same way.”

James goes on to point out that some of the stuff they want is stuff they shouldn’t have---- but that’s a topic for another post.

If your life is a continuing cycle of 4 months of ballin’ followed by 2 months of bankruptcy and begging------ where da’ crap  do you think your bankruptcy comes from?  It’s not because of haters, or the government, or your baby’s daddy/ mama ‘nem.  It’s because as soon as you get a little money, you spend it foolishly.   Stop the foolishness (STOP not pause and restart) and the cycle of desperation will magically go away.

If you keep falling in and out of toxic, dead-end, destructive relationships------ who da’ crap do you think keeps bringing these people into your life?  The neighborhood doesn’t go out with them.  Your “haters” don’t give them your number and home address.  And all men/ all women aren’t like that----- or you wouldn’t have so many couples to envy.  Baby, it’s you.  If you stop selecting your romantic interests based on the worst possible set of standards then you wouldn’t keep ending up with the worst possible kinds of people.

If your church is in continual decline----- who?  Who in crap do you think is killing the ministry?  The gates of Hell can’t prevail against the church, but the Hell on the inside will kill it like cancer.  Stop blaming the media, the bishops, the big church up the road, and the devil.  It is the wars and fights we perpetuate among ourselves that kill churches.  It is our own desires for power and control no matter what the cost to the young, the weak, and the spiritually vulnerable.

We fail because we keep doing the things that cause failure and we not only expect a different result, we haven’t even accepted that our current results are our fault.

Fortunately, James articulates the solution as well as the problem.

James 4: 7-12.

·         Submit to God.

·         Resist the devil

·         Draw near to God

·         Cleanse your hands

·         Purify your hearts

·         Lament

·         Mourn

·         Weep

·         Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.

·         Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord

·         Do not speak evil of one another

Do these things instead of what you’ve been doing/ are doing now and these will be your new results:

·         The devil will flee from you.

·         God will draw near to you.

·         The Lord will lift you up.

If you want different, you gotta do different.  But first, you have to accept that what you are still doing is the reason that you are still failing.

Yeah, I know that sucks, but I’m only telling you because I love you.

A WORD TO THE WISE. Proverb 30: 23a "She's Just Hateful"

Proverbs 30: 21     For three things the earth is perturbed.  Yes, for four it cannot bear up:
22     For a servant when he reigns,
A fool when he is filled with food,
23     A hateful woman when she is married,
And a maidservant who succeeds her mistress.

Proverbs 30: 21, 23.  The sage lists 4 things that create turmoil in the world.  The last two involve women.  (This is where I could quite easily make a sarcastic, semi-sexist comment, but I will resist.)

#3 on the list of earth shaking ironies is a hateful woman when she is married.  Some translations say an unloved woman, but that’s not accurate.  The adjective used is sane| saw-nay’|, which means hate, to hate, and enemy, to be hateful, or, in its participle form, simply “hater.”

So here’s the point:  Finding a man won’t fix you if you’re broken.  If you are, as I heard husbands in Bassfield lament, “just plain hateful” then marriage is not the solution.

A bitter woman (or man) wrapped in the sacred bonds of marriage is a spiritual danger to herself and to others.  Marriage is designed to be an example to the world of the mystery of the intimate relationship between Jesus and His Bride, the Church (Ephesians 5: 31-33).

When our individual hatefulness & brokenness overwhelms the marriage bond, what we deliver in marriage is a corrupted and distorted image of salvation.  The power of our individual prayers is diminished (1 Peter 3: 7).  And our spiritual legacy is corrupted as we produce damaged children instead of godly offspring (Malachi 2: 13-15).

Look around.  Look well, and you’ll see that one of the major reasons our world is so disturbed is that our marriages are so disturbing.

People postpone marriage until they reach a certain status, income, or educational level.  Yet, seldom do couples wait until they’ve dealt with their respective foolishness, hatefulness, and insanity.

So Mr.  Crazy marries Ms. Hateful and the whole world suffers.
